Silence of a Runway | PAM HOGG S/S2014

Written and photographed by Adrenus Craton

I always wondered what goes through the mind of a model as she (or he) makes their way down the catwalk towards the light of photographers waiting for that one-second pose. Are they silently cheering themselves on? Or maybe stepping to the beat of the show music… Do they count as they get closer to the mark? 1, 2, 3, pose, and pose and turn.

Mostly, I wonder about those few moments right before and right after they 'strike a pose' - As I sat underneath a big pile of photographers (at the Pam Hogg Spring/Summer 2014 show for Vauxhall Fashion Scout during London Fashion Week), something strange started happening. I had managed to adjust my settings (completely by accident), and was now shooting rapid fire like an AK-47 happy machine gun. It annoyed me at first. A quick peek to see what had happened, and I noticed one photo of a model with her eyes closed.. then another with her eyes shut. Interesting.

I didn't give it much thought until after downloading all the images a few days later. I even nearly deleted them as I was going through and editing the whole bunch from the show, but something shouted 'keep them!'… So, after everything was finished I went back to these photos again. I started grouping them together to see how many of these i had and a wave of inspiration flooded over me.

Silence. This is what I heard.

Maybe.... just maybe, this is what these beautiful, runway galloping, creatures had whizzing through their minds in these few seconds. (I will make a point to find out for sure the next time) In an instant they gave way to the silence of a runway.
