"Battle of the Soul"
The Battle of the Soul Collection is centred around 14 historically controversial, widely-known and talked about, concepts derived from the seven sins and the seven virtues.
The collection is meant to reflect my own experience through the realm of Forms, and quite frankly, begs the question of whether any one side can be chosen at all. This particular collection was born in Kraków, Poland, circa 2005, during the time period leading up to Pope John Paul II’s untimely death and during the rise in succession of the newly elected Pope Benedict XVI.
Personally, the story is told from a side that has been lived, relived and born again from within. It’s told from a side of Self, a side of wonder, a side of innocence, a side of love, a side of pain, a side of fear, a side of despair, a side of uncertainty, a side of courage, bravery, awakening and truth.
Living in and travelling throughout so many different parts of the world has prompted me, the artist, to ask the same question again and again, "What really is this battle of the soul?" And ultimately, what I discovered is, that this battle is many things. It is what defines us, yet, also what stands behind us. It is what we let consume and confine us, yet, also sets us free.
For me, this battle starts to erupt as soon as I stop singing my song — as soon as I start playing melodies of Lust, Greed, Sloth and Rage... Envy, Pride and Gluttony. This infinite collection is all about THAT, feelings of taboo vs normality, good vs bad, weakness vs power, and what we all interpret as sin vs virtue. Once a painting from the original collection finds a home, another version is created in its place, so that there are always 14 paintings (at least) in my artist’s collection.
